Stepping Back

JP and I finished watching 1900 House today and the entire time we were watching it we kept talking about whether or not we could do something like that with our lives — meaning either live for a few months or even when we settle down and get a house have minimal modern improvements.

Without a doubt, we both think that it wouldn’t be a problem for us to live without things like cell phones, the laptop I’m typing on, netflix, nintendo and such.  However there are a few things that we both don’t think we could live without that are of the modern era:

JP

  • Running hot water
  • Electric lights

Me

  • Refrigeration
  • Croc-pot
  • Washer/Dryer
  • Modern fem needs — sorry, this is TMI, but I really couldn’t!

This has got me to thinking that maybe it would be a good thing to really pair down what we take for granted modern technology-wise, and cut the fat so to speak.  I do think that it would be a good thing for once the geeklings come along.  We’ve already decided that we DO NOT want them to turn into tv/video game/internet drones.  Rather, see us as being the types of parents who regularly kick the kids outside to go play.  But that might just be my passion for the outdoors and environmental education kicking in O:)  In all seriousness though, I want our kids to have an imagination and go off and play games on their own and in their own little worlds for hours on end.  Watch, I say that now but in ten years when thats reality I’ll find it SUPER annoying. 😛  Though, I like the idea of limiting where internet and TV would be accessable… hmmm…

There are a few things I think that they family from 1900 House had to deal with that I don’t think we could, like:

  • Whalebone corsets
  • No modern soaps — we tend to be in favor of clean hair over here
  • No modern toothcare — heh… yeah…

Funny… but I think thats about it.

So what modern items could you live without?
